The Town of Southampton takes garbage pretty seriously.
According to Southampton’s Town Board: “The key to being “Garbage Smart” is to avoid producing trash in the first place. If you don’t create the garbage, you don’t have to worry about getting rid of it.”
The town provides no garbage pickup services!!
This green-thinking town utilizes a pay-per-bag program for resident self-haulers only.
Residents must purchase green, ‘Town of Southampton’ garbage bags from local stores (see picture below), and bring their household garbage and recyclables to any one of the four town-operated recycling centers.
Southampton Town “Green Bags” for garbage disposal at Town facilities:
Large bags are 5 for $14.50 – 33 gallon
Medium Bags are 5 for $7.50 – 13 gallons
That way people must pay for, and transport, their own garbage.
Sounds messy? We say it’s a perfectly clean way to reduce and eliminate unnecessary garbage, and to properly dispose of collected waste.
